Annual Report 2006

 The message is still relevant

Anne Frank’s diary is the most widely read testimony on the crimes of the national-socialist regime in the world. Still today, more than sixty years after Anne Frank’s death, exhibitions are staged in all parts of the world – this was also the case in 2006. Buddy Elias, chairman of the AFF, is Anne Frank’s cousin and her last living immediate relative. In the year under report, his memories and thoughts were documented in a several-hour film interview.

The ANNE FRANK-Fonds (AFF) is a charitable foundation that has the purpose of promoting social and cultural projects in the spirit of Anne Frank. More than sixty years after her death, Anne Frank’s message to the world is as relevant as ever: a strong commitment to resist racism and anti-Semitism.

Allocations to organisations and projects
In 2006 the planned allocation budget was exceeded by 6.5 percent. However, since the support went to institutions and projects that centre on AFF’s core issues, the excess expenditure was approved by the foundation’s board. The following organisations and projects received support in the year under report:
  • Anne Frank Medical Fund
  • University of Sussex
  • Schnürschuhtheater Bremen
  • Leo Baeck Education Centre Haifa
  • Medienfalle Basel
  • ADAM Institute
  • Exilio Lindau
  • Christlicher Friedensdienst Bern
  • Stiftung „Gesicht zeigen“ Berlin
  • Arab-Jewish Community Center Haifa
  • Verein Lebensträume Basel
  • Lernen im Park Basel
  • AMCHA Jerusalem
  • Pestalozzi Children’s Foundation Trogen
  • Anne Frank-Friedenstage Bergen
  • ELAH
  • Stiftung für Erziehung und Toleranz Zürich
  • Anne-Frank-Societies in Amsterdam, London, Berlin and Frankfurt/Main
All the allocations were reviewed according to the strict guidelines of AFF byelaws and were found to be in accordance with the aims of AFF. After submission of the details of the construction project, AFF also agreed to cover 10 percent of the renovation costs of the Anne Frank House (AFS) in Amsterdam.

Increase of total assets and capital yield
AFF total assets increased by approximately 4.5 percent due to favourable stock-market transactions and controlled expenditure. The return on royalties declined slightly while the yield on capital increased. Strict cost control will be retained also in the future. The annual financial statement was drawn up by an external accounting office and endorsed by the auditing company Deloitte AG Basel. The board of trustees approved the statement in its meeting of May 2007.

Activities and organisational matters
The board of trustees held 15 meetings and several teleconferences. Outside the meetings, the single members of the board spent much time in attending to their separate portfolios.
In the year under report the executive board of the Anne Frank House (AFS), Amsterdam, paid a visit to AFF, while several AFF board members visited AFS in Amsterdam. The current collaboration was discussed in a number of very constructive talks.

Projects in the year under report
  • Project “Archive”. In the very near future AFF and AFS will be able profit from a joint archive: the project in Amsterdam is nearing completion. Approximately 120,000 images were selected and saved in a digital archive. The project also includes the drawing-up of a loan contract through which third parties will be able to access and use assets that belong to AFF. The work on this project lies in the responsibility of the board of trustees and enjoys the expert support of the historian Peter Toebak.
  • Project “Buddy – a witness of his time”. Buddy (Bernd) Elias, chairman of the AFF, is Anne Frank’s cousin and her last living immediate relative. This several-hour film interview reflects many of his thoughts and his memories of his cousin Anne Frank. The interview was conducted by Buddy Elias’ son.
  • Project “Internet”. The AFF website was completely reorganised and –designed. The assignment went to the company WerbeLinie AG in Thun. After a few trial runs the newly designed website was approved.
  • Project “letters exhibition”. After intensive preliminary work that was done by Peter Toebak (commissioned jointly by AFF and AFS), an exhibition went on show in Amsterdam, based on letters belonging to the Frank family. The exhibition met with great public interest and was seen by many visitors.
Other activities across the world
  • Six thousand copies of the diary were sent by AFS to an exhibition that was shown in Cuba. The costs were carried by the AFF.
  • A further exhibition on Anne Frank was shown in Buenos Aires.
  • The request to build a replica of the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam by the Holocaust Museum in Houston, Texas, USA, was turned down by AFF and AFS.
  • It was decided that translations of “The Diary of Anne Frank” have to be based exclusively on the Dutch original.
