Basis of decisions

The donation policy of the ANNE FRANK FONDS is based on Otto Frank's instructions and on decisions made by the Board of Trustees. This policy is guided by Otto Frank's last will and testament, Anne Frank's diary, the focus of donations (which is determined each year) and last, but not least the donation budget of the year in question.

Projects outside of Switzerland will, as a general rule, only be taken into consideration upon a recommendation of a Swiss institution (such as a NGO, foundation, association, etc.) listed in the register of commerce and recognised as being charitable, or - in exceptional cases - also by trustworthy private persons. Such institutions or persons must be familiar with the project abroad and ready to submit the application on its behalf under their own name. Furthermore, they must vouch for the proper implementation of the project.

Projects from Israel:

The Anne Frank Fonds Basel (AFF) and the New Israel Fund (NIF) have formed a partnership for grant making in Israel. NIF will handle all applications form Israel on behalf of the AFF with immediate effect. Applications for grants in Israel are to be sent to the following e-mail address:

Applications must be made in writing (by post or e-mail) to the AFF and must include the following:

  • Description of project
  • Financing plan
  • Project budget and organizational budget
  • Information about further applications pertaining to the same matter
  • Information about the applicant and/or institution
  • Contact person

To encourage applications from the widest possible spectrum, the AFF deliberately does not provide an application form.
The following list of criteria can be used to check whether an application meets the specifications. Projects with the following focuses are promoted:

  • Combating racism, anti-Semitism, prejudice and violence
  • Education of children and teenagers
  • Women's and children's rights
  • Dialogue across cultural, religious and ethnic boundaries
  • Promotion of peace
  • Holocaust survivors
  • Refugee relief

The Board of Trustees generally announces its decisions without providing reasons within 8-10 weeks of receipt of the application. The ANNE FRANK FONDS does not provide any information on the amount of donations; these vary depending on the project and the applicant. The submitted documents are not returned.

Requests for donations or enquiries about the use of original texts, photos and adapting material included in the legal domain of the ANNE FRANK FONDS must be addressed in writing to:
